The Gentle Art

What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-jitsu is a martial art and combat sport focused on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. Often called the "gentle art," its core philosophy is to use an opponent's force and momentum against them rather than meeting it with direct strength.

The goal is to take an opponent to the ground and force a submission. Techniques are designed to allow a smaller, weaker person to defend against a larger attacker through mechanical advantage and technique alone.

Jiu-jitsu is great for the mind and the body. Learn one of the most effective martial arts whilst burning calories and improving your cardiovascular health.

🥋
Submissions

Joint locks (like armbars) and chokeholds used to end a fight with control, not force.

Positional Control

Dominant positions mount, side control, taking the back to limit your opponent's options.

⚖️
Leverage

Mechanical advantage over raw power smaller fighters can defeat much larger opponents.

From Feudal Japan to the World

Originating in feudal Japan, jujutsu was developed by the samurai as a method of close combat for situations where they were unarmed. In the early 20th century, Japanese martial artist Mitsuyo Maeda taught jiu-jitsu to the Gracie family in Brazil who adapted it to focus heavily on ground fighting, creating what is now the most popular global form of the art.

Ryan Petford

ADCC Champion

Training under Antonio Cadete and Pete Robson since white belt, Ryan quickly found a passion for competing with success locally and across the UK as a white belt, blue belt and now purple belt.

Within 3 years Ryan has made the step up to the professional ADCC masters category and recently won the 100kg plus and Absolutes at ADCC Swiss Open and the ADCC Dublin Open beating experienced black belts.

With a 20 year background in bodybuilding and strength training Ryan believes strength work alongside Jiu-Jitsu is a major advantage especially in competition. Ryan has recently started training in wrestling under Kane Craig to improve his standing grappling and looks forward to taking the step into coaching.
